We Make Beauty Look Easy

Pigmentation.

Pigmentation, often referred to as hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone, can be a common concern for many individuals. Whether it’s sunspots, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the Cove team is here to guide you on your journey to clearer, more luminous skin.

What Causes Skin Pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to the color of your skin, determined by a pigment called melanin. Melanin is produced by specialized skin cells called melanocytes, and its production can be stimulated by sun exposure, hormones, and aging. Areas of the skin may develop dark spots or patches, resulting in an uneven or blotchy appearance.

Main causes of dark spots include:

  • Sun exposure:

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun stimulate melanin production, resulting in dark spots (sunspots) on areas of the skin frequently exposed to sunlight, such as the cheeks, nose, forehead and arms.

  • Hormonal fluctuations:

Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy or when taking certain medications, can lead to development of dark patches known as melasma. They typically appear on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip.

  • Skin inflammation:

Inflammatory processes within the skin, such as those caused by acne, eczema, psoriasis, or injuries, can trigger an overproduction of melanin. This phenomenon, termed post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, results in the formation of darker patches or spots in the affected areas.

  • Genetics: Some individuals inherit a genetic predisposition for pigmentation irregularities, such as freckles or birthmarks.
